Here I am backstage at the Walter Kerr the other night with my good friend, Angela. If there’s any justice in the world, she’ll be picking up a record sixth Tony Award on June 13th for her delicious work in the revival of Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music. As the aging courtesan Madame Armfeldt she laments, “where’s discretion of the heart, where’s passion in the art, where’s craft?†while watching the earth-bound clowns around her foolishly muddle sex with mere desire. It’s a supporting role to be sure, yet the humanity she brings to bear centers this production – plus she’s a hoot to boot! Trevor Nunn’s production is scheduled to close June 20, so might I suggest you get it in gear before this sweetly elegiac waltz comes to an end.
